How large does a backyard have to be for an inground pool?

backyard

My wife and I have always wanted to put in a pool in the backyard, but we have a pretty small space to work with. I’m not sure of our exact backyard dimensions, but I would say it is roughly 25′*70′. Could this work?

  1. Check your local building codes as that varies from place to place. Depending on your area this may decrease the value of your home. Many buyers fill in the pool with dirt and destroy it as their first act after possession. Think about installing an above ground pool to see if you really want and will use one..

People buy a house because they like the house for many other reasons. The further North you go the less use you get from a pool, and there are neighbor kids, insurance liabilities, and maintenance issues including seasonal opening and closing that can be both a nuisance and an expense. I’ve seen three filled in within a half mile radius of my home..

  2. Now, why would someone buy a house with a pool, then fill it in with dirt?? If you don’t want a pool, you don’t buy a house with one to start with.

Anyway, back to the question. Sure, that’s plenty of room. There are many sizes of pools. You pool contractor will help you decide.

  3. Check local building code for side and rear setbacks… if they are small enough, you only really need room for a skirt or sidewalk around it. ( and a fence of course )
