We live in NJ and we recently gutted our backyard. We did not put down grass seed in time and now it is too cold. What can we put down that looks better and also will help to promote good growth in the spring? The backyard is plain dirt!

  1. You can wait till late winter and spread grass seed, any snow you get will not hurt the seed and will help it make contact with the soil giving you a head start on growth in the spring.

  2. You could still sow some rye grass. It will germinate because there are some warm days, even in winter. Rye is cheap and 25 pounds would do an average back yard.

  3. There really isn’t anything you can put down unless you want astroturf. Just kidding. Leave it until spring and then seed or sod.
